Pedestrian Killed at Middle Tennesse Blvd and Greenland Near MTSU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A student attending Middle Tennessee State University was killed Friday morning while crossing Greenland Drive on the northwest corner of the campus.

Police say 28 year-old David R. Chitwood was struck just before 9 a.m. at the intersection of Middle Tennessee Blvd. and Greenland Drive. Chitwood was transported to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Lee Roberts, who owns a small business near the intersection, tells WMOT he arrived on the scene just after the accident occurred. Robertson says it appeared that a dump truck had struck a person in a wheel chair.

MTSU says Chitwood was a junior mass communications major. The university says its counseling service will be available to any student who wishes to speak to someone about the accident, particularly any student who may have witnessed the tragedy.

MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee was quoted as saying

“It’s a tragedy anytime MTSU loses a member of the university family, particularly when it involves one of our students. Our deepest sympathies are with the Chitwood family, who will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Murfreesboro Police say their FACT traffic unit is continuing to investigate the accident.
