Mid-state ministry sends a team to Nepal

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A medical team assembled by the Brentwood based disaster relief ministry Hope Force arrived in Nepal this week.

The team of nine includes a doctor, several nurses, a disaster management specialist, logistics staff and a chaplain. The Hope Force team hails from Tennessee, three other states, Canada and the Netherlands. They’re going staffed and supplied to see 3,000 to 5,000 patients, or may provide respite for local doctors in need of a break.

Mid-state resident Chuck Duby is the Hope Force Sr. Chaplain and the team’s leader. He says a Christian ministry serving in largely Hindu and Buddist Nepal will be a challenge, but one he says Hope Force trains its reservists to handle.

“To talk about God sometimes in those situations is not the best thing to do. The best thing to do is give them what they need. Sometimes it’s a cup of cold water, sometimes it’s just to hear them tell their story.”

Hope Force holds regular training sessions to prepare volunteers to serve in disaster areas. The ministry now has disaster reservists in 40 states and 8 countries.
