MURFREESBORO. Tenn. (WMOT) -- Murfreesboro Police say what appeared to be a real grenade was found at a local apartment complex over the weekend.
An MPD incident report says officers were called to the Nilewood Apartments on East Main Friday night after a resident reported finding a grenade.
When police arrived on the scene, a Mr. Johnny Cope handed the grenade to an officer. He told authorities he’d found it lying by the stop sign at the corner of East Main and Billbro Ave.
The report says officers thought the grenade looked real and it was placed in a safe spot until an Explosives Ordinance Specialist with the Tennessee Highway Patrol arrived to take possession.
The THP told WMOT Tuesday morning that the grenade is a real, WWII "pineapple type" hand grenade, but that the devise was not active.
