Tennessee, American South least safe places to live

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A new study says Tennessee is one of the most dangerous places in the nation to live.

The personal finance website Wallethub.com had its analysts look at more than just crime rates to rank the states for safety. The study factored in 20 different metrics.

Wallethub’s Jill Gonzalez says Tennessee ranked fourth from the bottom among the 50 states and the District of Columbia. She notes that the state has an unusually large number of police officers, but that doesn’t seem to be helping.

“Kind of a weird thing happening here with Tennessee. As far as the total number of law enforcement employees, it actually has the second highest in the country. But even for having som many of them it has the third highest number of assaults and pretty high counts of murders as well.”

Gonzalez says the numbers show a clear regional pattern. Most southern states rank near the bottom on the safety index, while most of the safest states are located in the northeast.
