BURKESVILLE, KY (WMOT) – The fugitive officials say shot a Tennessee policeman nearly a week ago died in a shootout with officers last night in Kentucky.
According to WSMV-TV, 62-year-old Floyd Cook was spotted in a ditch just south of Burkesville by a police helicopter using thermal imaging.
He was confronted minutes later by a pair of Kentucky State Police officers and a U.S. Marshall. Gunfire erupted and Cook was struck several times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police in Allgood, Tennessee, accuse Cook of shooting a police officer there this past Saturday. About an hour later, State Police say Cook exchanged gunfire with officers near Burkeville, Kentucky.
Searchers thought they had Cook cornered a couple of times in the days that followed, but he continued to allude police.
Schools in Cumberland County, Kentucky, were closed three days this week as the manhunt continued.
The Allgood officer shot Saturday was wearing a vest and not seriously injured.
