MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- Two people are dead and Tennessee has declared a State of Emergency after severe storms tore across the mid-state Wednesday night.
A preliminary report from the National Weather Service says four tornadoes struck Middle Tennessee. Two twisters were reported in Wayne County, one at the Smith/Dekalb County line and one in Perry County.
WSMV-TV says the two people killed in Perry County are 70-year-old Antonio Gomez Yzaquirre and his wife, 69-year-old Annie Yzaguirre. At last word authorities were still trying to recover their bodies from the rubble of their home.
The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency has moved to a Level III State of Emergency as a result of the storms. State teams have been dispatched to Wayne and Perry Counties to assess damage.
In all, 11 mid-state counties are reporting damage Thursday morning. The destruction ranges from the deaths in Perry County, to homes damaged in Wayne County, to trees and power lines down in Sumner County.
The Weather Service says the mid-state may see more storms Thursday night. Storms are likely Christmas Day.
