Officials keep eye on rising water at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The flooding that’s killed 25 people in the Mid-West has now reached Tennessee.

Officials say a swollen Mississippi River is nearing some homes in low-lying areas in Memphis.

Emergency responders made on-site inspections Sunday in Memphis and Shelby County neighborhoods that could be affected by rising water.

Officials say the Mississippi River won’t crest until Friday. They’re expecting it to reach 41 feet before subsiding.

Dale Lane, director of the Shelby County Office of Preparedness, says all main roads are open, but says people need to be on the lookout to avoid being trapped by high water.

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland says the city has so far been fortunate that high water has not gotten into any homes or businesses.
