Southern Poverty Law Center will investigate the arrest of 10 Murf. school children
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- A video has now surfaced that’s said to show the fight that resulted in ten children being arrested by Murfreesboro Police last Friday.
The video has been colorized to mask the identity of the children involved. It shows several boys yelling at and striking a child as he tries to walk away. The boy being bullied doesn’t appear to be injured and doesn’t retaliate over the length of the video.
The Daily News Journal says a parent of one of the arrested children tells them the video is of the fight that triggered the arrests. However, the newspaper says it hasn’t been able to independently verify the authenticity of the recording.
This past Friday, ten children were reportedly arrested by Murfreesboro Police in connection with the fight. They were detained and handcuffed at Hobgood Elementary, although the fight did not occur on school grounds.
The Southern Poverty Law Center now says it will investigate the arrests of the children, who reportedly range from 6 to 11 years of age. The Montgomery, Alabama based civil rights organization says the incident is “yet another example of the over-policing of schoolchildren.”
