MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- A McMinnville woman is facing a charge of Leaving a Child Unattended after police say she left her baby in the car while she shopped.
Rutherford County resident Cuervo Elizalde called police Wednesday afternoon to report that he’d discovered a crying child alone in a running, unlocked car in the parking lot of the Shoe Carnival Store on Old Fort Parkway.
When the child’s mother, 25-year-old Sarah M. Burks, returned to her car a few minutes later she found officers waiting for her. Police say she told them she’d only been in the store 20 minutes, but officers say video surveillance indicates she was in the store for nearly an hour.
Wednesday's high temperature in Murfreesboro was 85 degrees. The child was given a quick checkup by EMS and found to have suffered no injury.
Burks was booked into the Rutherford County Jail on a $1,500 bond. She’ll make an initial appearance in General Sessions Court in late July.
