National Dance Day: Activities planned for Nashville

nashvilleballet.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  It's time to get your dancing shoes laced up for National Dance Day.

The Nashville Ballet will this Saturdy be offering free sample classes and a group dance. Several different dance styles will be made available, including ballet, adult contemporary and Hip Hop. There’s also a dance workout class called DanceFix.

This is the seventh year the Nashville company has sponsored a Dance Day celebration. The ballet’s Nick Mullikin says a lot of people start out feeling self-conscious, but that doesn’t last long.

“And then they realize that everybody’s just like them. It’s not just a bunch of professional dancers just waiting for you to come in and judge you. Everybody’s just trying to have a good time and enjoy the space.”

No registration is required. Just show up on Saturday at the ballet’s facility on Redmon Street. Mullikin says there are opportunities for all ages and skill levels.

“An adult Intro to Ballet at 10 a.m. We’re going to be doing an Adult Contemporary Class and a Youth Hip Hop class at 11 a.m. and then we’re going to be doing the So You Think You Can Dance choreography at noon.”

That last comes, of course, from the Fox TV show of the same name. After a few lessons the dancers will perform the dance the piece together. This year’s official dance training video can be found online.
