Study gives Tennessee public education a barely passing grade

wallethub.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (OSBORNE) -- As the school year begins a new study ranks the states with the best and worst school systems and Tennessee has a barely passing grade.

Wallethub.com ranked Tennessee public education 34th in the nation.

The study looked at 29 metrics, including school funding, academic test scores, and school safety.

Wallethub’s Jill Gonzalez says one of the areas Tennessee trails other states is teacher to student ratios.

“Right now it’s around 18 students for every one teacher. The sweet spot, where states like Massachusetts and New Jersey are, is more like 12 to 13 per every one teacher.”

Gonzalez says Tennessee’s per pupil spending also falls well below the national average.
