Briley and Cooper come out swinging in televised runoff campaign debate

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (OSBORNE) -- Mayor David Briley and Councilman John Cooper went at each other hard during Monday night’s televised mayoral campaign debate from Belmont University.

Briley was especially aggressive, blasting Cooper in nearly every response.

Money issues dominated with the candidates sparring over taxes and the city’s debt. Although they disagreed on funding, both men promised better teacher pay. Mayor Briley pledged...

“What we have to do is make a commitment, no matter what it takes, to get our teachers to a level where they can afford to live in the city where they teach.”

And Cooper’s response...

“I’ve made a really radical promise in my 47 page platform. Going forward, half of our new money needs to go to education.”

Early voting is under way for the September 12 Runoff election. Thirteen races are on the ballot, including mayor, four At Large council seats and eight council district seats.
