Bill authorizing home businesses, including home studios, passes in Metro Council

Lij Shaw

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mike Osborne)  --  The Nashville City Council Wednesday morning updated Metro’s regulations to allow in-home businesses, including home studios.

WPLN reports the vote came at around 1 a.m. toward the end of a marathon session.

The measure includes many restrictions including on hours of operation, the number of customers that can be in the home at any given time, as well as the number of employees who can work there.

East Nashville Music Producer Lij Shaw was a tireless promoter of the bill's passage. Shaw launched a Change.org petition supporting the measure that gained well over 166,000 signatures.

An excited Shaw told Facebook friends following the bill's passage, "We won tonight!!! ...If you need to have a customer visit your home to teach a guitar lesson, or cut their hair, or edit their website, or record a song... you are now allowed to do so legally! Pretty crazy that it was illegal before this."

Not everyone will be happy with the change. When a public hearing was held on the bill in early June the majority of speakers expressed concerns. The measure does contain a provision that allows for a home business license to be revoked after three complaints.
