Nashville Democrat Jim Cooper apologizes for comment about South Carolina voters

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mike Osborne)  --  Mid-state Congressional Rep. Jim Cooper delivered an apology Sunday in the opinion section of the Tennessean.

Last week the Nashville Democrat was quoted by two local papers saying the residents of South Carolina must have, his words, “extra chromosomes.”

Cooper made the comment in reference to the reelection of South Carolina Republican Rep. Lindsey Graham. Graham has been an outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump.

Extra chromosomes in human DNA are associated with certain birth defects, including Down syndrome.

Saying he takes “full responsibility” for the slur, Cooper apologized for “an ignorant and thoughtless comment.”
