NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mike Osborne) -- Saturday marks the one-year anniversary of Tennessee’s first COVID-19 related fatality.
It was on March 20, 2020 that Nashville health officials announced a 73 year-old Metro resident had died due to virus complications.
As of Thursday, 11,681 Tennesseans have died after contracting coronavirus.
That number far exceeds the 7721 deaths recorded in Tennessee during the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic. It also exceeds the combined number of Tenneseans who have died fighting in all of the nation's foriegn wars.
Nearly nine out of 10 of the past year's fatalities have occurred among Tennesseans 61 years of age or older.
Some 877 of those deaths have been recorded in Metro Nashville.
