Sen. Blackburn: Abandoning the Syrian Kurds to have 'grave consequences for U.S. national security'

WASHINGTON, DC (OSBORNE) -- Senator Marsha Blackburn is one of President Donald Trump's most ardent supporters, but the relationship has been strained this month by the presiden't abrupt withdrawal of U.S. forces from Syria.

Tennessee's junior Republican Senator is pushing back hard against Trump’s decision to abandon the Syrian Kurds allied with the U.S. in Syria against the terroist group ISIS.

This past week, Blackburn announced her support for legislation meant to punish Turkey for attacking Kurdish forces following the U.S. withdrawal. In her remarks introducing the measure, Blackburn noted Middle Tennessee's large Kurdish immigrant community.

“The Kurds have stood with us without fail. They have been resolute in their ability to push back on evil. They have been resolute in pushing back on ISIS.”

Earlier this week Blackburn met with a Srian Kurd dignitary, one of the few Republicans to do so. The Senator followed up on that meeting with a scathing letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

In the note Blackburn blasts the Trump Administration's decision to abandon the Kurds. She contends the move will have “grave consequences for U.S. national security.”
