Tenn. Senator Alexander pans Trump move on WHO during pandemic

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT)  --  Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander is again challenging a decision by President Donald Trump.

The Senator on Wednesday criticized the president’s decision to pull the U.S. out of the World Health Organization.

Trump has blasted the agency for its handling of the coronavirus pandemic and accused it of failing to hold China accountable for the crisis.

Alexander wrote Wednesday that he agreed the WHO’s performance needs examination, but concluded “the time to do that is after the crisis has been dealt with, not in the middle of it.”

The senator has generally been supportive of the president, but has also been one of the few Republicans willing to challenge Trump on some issues.

Alexander is retiring at the end of the current legislative session.
