United Way Provides Free Tax Prep.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The deadline for filing your 2011 taxes is quickly approaching. The Internal Revenue Service says Tuesday April 17, one week from tomorrow, is the last day to file taxes without penalty.

Here in Middle Tennessee, United Way is offering free tax preparation assistance. Individuals and families earning up to $57,000 a year may qualify for help with their taxes. You can call the 211 United Way help line to confirm that you qualify, to get the address of the nearest tax prep site, and for a checklist of items you’ll need to bring along.

The United Way’s Jessica Ho explains what tax filers can expect.

“They go to the site. They’ll need to take their photo ID, social security card, tax documents with them. Once they go into the site they’ll fill out some paper work and it’ll take about 30 minutes or so to get their taxes prepared. They can also do direct deposit of their refund, simply straight into a checking or savings account.”

Ho says United Way volunteer tax preparers are IRS trained and certified. Preparers are capable of doing complex filings, and also file extensions or amendments.
