MURFREESBORO, TN (WMOT) – Convicted murderer Shanterrica Madden is appealing her verdict in the stabbing death of MTSU basketball standout Tina Stewart.
WSMV-TV reports (http://tinyurl.com/8udmtxj) Madden’s lawyer is asking for a new trial on the grounds that the prosecution didn’t provide sufficient evidence to convict.
Madden stood trial in May in Murfreesboro on a charge of first degree murder. Jurors returned a verdict of second-degree murder.
Police say she stabbed former roommate Stewart in 2011 as the two women first argued, then fought in their off-campus apartment.
In his filing, defense attorney Joe Brandon Jr. also contends Madden’s 29 year sentence was excessive.
