Mystery shrouds Tenn. missionary slaying, child abduction in Haiti
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Haitian investigators are searching for the gunmen who snatched a 4-year-old boy after murdering an American missionary who had raised him in a children's home since he was a malnourished infant.
Roberta Edwards ran a small children's home in the Haitian capital that is overseen and funded by the Estes Church of Christ in Henderson, Tennessee. She had lived mostly in Haiti for two decades.
She was killed over the weekend by two gunmen who cut off her car as she was returning home from a gas station. Two teenage passengers in her vehicle managed to escape, but the gunmen sped off with the youngster.
The motive behind the killing and apparent kidnapping remains unclear. Authorities say there was no ransom demand as of Wednesday afternoon.
