Detective: Nashville couple killed over $650 drug debt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Investigators say that a Nashville couple told them that they killed a young couple they were living with last month because the suspects did not want to repay a $650 drug debt.

Local media outlets report that Nashville Police Detective Mike Roland testified in court Thursday that Brandon Griswold and Whitney Gray killed 24-year-old Preston Claybrooks Jr. and his longtime girlfriend, 23-year-old Alexandra Grubbs on Sept. 21 while they were sleeping. Roland says the victims were bludgeoned to death with a hammer and a microphone stand.

The bodies were found wrapped in bedding inside one of the home's closets six days later.

Roland says Gray has told investigators that Claybrooks was a drug dealer and that she and Griswold owed $650 to Claybrooks for heroin.

Both Griswold and Gray are charged with criminal homicide.
