MNPS Board ends director search, appoints Dr. Battle to post

MNPS

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mike Osborne) -- Nashville has a new Director of Schools.

Interim Director Dr. Adrienne Battle has been awarded the post permanently. Dr. Battle is the first woman to hold the top position at MNPS. She is a Nashville native and graduate of Nashville Shools.

In a press statement announcing the decision, Dr. Battle is quoted saying "this is not a stepping stone for me. This is home, this is family, and I intend to act as such."

The Tennessean quotes Board Chair Anna Shepherd saying the city’s schools need “continuity” as they face the twin coronavirus and tornado emergencies.

The Metro School Board suspended its nationwide search for a new director during a specially called meeting Friday. The board was in the midst of interviewing five finalist candidates when the search was closed.

Board member Jill Speering was not present for Friday's meeting. The board will begin contract negotiations with Dr. Battle when Speering returns.
