NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mike Osborne)  --  Tennessee’s battle with COVID-19 is not off to a promising start in October.

Health officials report just over 18,000 state residents currently have active infections. That’s the largest number of active cases Tennessee has reported since the first of July.

The new infections count rose 27 percent in the past seven days alone.

The number of COVID-19 deaths has risen for the past three weeks. A total of 198 state residents died of virus related complications during the week ending Saturday.

Tennessee reported an all-time high 63 virus related fatalities in 24 hours on Thursday.

Middle Tennessee State data journalist Dr. Ken Blake reports that Davidson, Williamson and Rutherford counties have all seen their coronavirus positivity rates and seven day average new case counts per 100,000 residents trend higher in the past week.
