Tenn. Senate to consider GOP bill that could derail the work of Nashville's Police oversight panel

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mike Osborne)  --  The work of Nashville’s police Community Oversight Board could be disrupted by a bill up for consideration Tuesday afternoon in the Tennessee Senate.

The measure would require members of every police oversight panel in the state to complete their local police department’s citizen police training academy within six months of joining the committee. If any member fails to graduate from the academy within that time the entire board would lose its operating authority until they do so.

The measure passed the Tennessee House in late March.

Tennessee’s GOP dominated General Assembly has repeatedly sought to curtail the authority of police oversight committees since the Nashville panel was approved by voters in 2018.
