Prominent Nashville based Southern Baptist official, Trump critic, tenders his resignation

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mike Osborne)  --  A top official with the Nashville based Southern Baptist Convention has announced his resignation.

The Baptist Press reports that SBC Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission President Russell Moore will end his eight year tenure June 1.

Beginning in 2016, Moore found himself at odds with many Southern Baptists over the candidacy and later presidency of Donald Trump. At one point Moore wrote that to support Trump “evangelicals and other social conservatives” must “repudiate everything they believe.”

Following the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, Moore called on President Trump to resign.

Moore’s condemnations of the president have received significant pushback. The Baptist Press notes that in 2017, Plano, Texas, Prestonwood Baptist Church Pastor Jack Graham accused Moore of “disrespectfulness towards Southern Baptist and other evangelical leaders, past and present.”

Moore will join the magazine Christianity Today where he’ll write a series devoted to, “cultivating a forward-looking, joyful, consistent Gospel witness.”
