Worst Tornado Damage in Cumberland, Dekalb Counties

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — Powerful storms claimed three lives in Tennessee Wednesday.  The storms were part of a massive severe weather system now blamed for 13 deaths in three states.

The damage appears to be light throughout most of Tennessee, but Cumberland and Dekalb Counties took a more direct hit.

Kenneth Carrey, Jr., is the Cumberland County Mayor.

"We think the path was about five miles in length, roughly, and one-and-a-half to two miles wide. Unfortunately, two fatalities and five others who were sent to Cumberland Medical Center for treatment. We have confirmed that seven homes were totally destroyed and over 50 other structures damagedfrom the storm."

One person is reported dead in Dekalb County.

The Weather Service had teams in the field Thursday to assess damage and determine just how many tornados actually touched down in the state.

The Weather Service is also expressing concern about a second weather system expected to pass through Tennessee beginning Thursday night and continuing into Friday. The Storm Prediction Center says that system has the potential for even more damage.
