Injuries, Damage Following Severe Storms

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — No deaths were reported in Tennessee after a series of strong storms pushed through the state Friday afternoon and evening. Three counties reported injuries and several reported light to moderate damage.

The Associated Press reported that six to eight people were hospitalized in Chattanooga and at least 20 homes destroyed after a possible tornado swept through the area early in the afternoon.

Damage was also reported in Bradley County. County mayor’s office spokesman Dan Howell told WMOT that two people were injured when a possible tornado passed through the Cleveland area.

Both survivors were initially trapped in debris, but were extracted by emergency crews.  One survivor was later listed in stable condition at a local hospital. The condition of the other survivor is not currently known.

Howell said it appeared about 20 homes in the Cleveland area were damaged.

WSMV-TV reports three people were injured in Jackson County, but no further details are currently available.

Some damage was reported in Dickson County as well, but Emergency Management Agency spokesman Warren Vaughn told WMOT that his crews had not yet been able to “get eyes on” the damage because storms were still pounding the area.

Light damage was reported in Davidson County.  WSMV-TV is reporting limbs down and some hail damage in Metro Nashville.

Nashville Electric reported about 5000 customers without power at the height of the storm.  Middle Tennessee Electric reported about 300 homes without power.

Sumner County reported light damage. No damage was reported in Rutherford, Cannon, or Coffee counties.
