NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mike Osborne)  --  Tennessee is one of more than 20 states experiencing a spike in new cases of COVID-19.

The number of new cases reported statewide spiked on Friday to an all-time high of 1188 confirmed infections in 24 hours. The state’s current four day running average of new cases currently stands at a record high 740 positive test results per day.

Nashville and Memphis also broke one day records last week for new confirmed cases. Nashville reported a new high of 300 cases in 24 hours. Memphis reported a new record of 400 infections in a single day.

The number of virus related deaths is also on the rise in Tennessee.

June is on track to be the worst month for COVID-19 related fatalities so far. There were 160 deaths statewide in the first 20 days of June. Compare that to May when there were 110 deaths at the same point. There were 129 deaths in the first 20 days of April.

Tennessee is just one of several states seeing spikes in new infections. The New York Times reports 22 states, mostly in the southern U.S., have seen their new case rates rise sharply in recent days.
