NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mike Osborne)  -- LifeFlight helicopters are transporting a growing number of COVID-19 patients from rural hospitals to Vanderbilt Medical Center.

VUMC reports in a press statement that it’s now averaging three virus related LifeFlights a day.

Only the most serious cases are transported by air.

The helicopter's interior has to be wiped down and then sprayed with disinfectant between flights.

Nashville health officials have reported that in some weeks as high as 40 percent of COVID-19 patients admitted to Metro hospitals are not Nashville residents.
