From WMOT News Director Mike Osborne: The reactions copied below were gathered from Twitter postings Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 6, 2021, between 3 and 3:30 p.m.

Congressional Rep. Chuck Fleischmann: “My staff & I are safe. Thank you to the brave men & women w/ Capitol Police. Peaceful protests are protected by the First Amendment in the U.S. Constitution. What is happening at the U.S. Capitol right now is not peaceful. I strongly condemn these actions. This is a sad day.”

Congressional Rep. David Kustoff: “Thank you to everyone for reaching out. I am safe. However, these actions are unacceptable. We are a nation of laws, not a nation of violence. Thank you to the U.S. Capitol police for your work at this time.”

Congressional Rep. Jim Cooper: “My staff and I are currently safe. This is a dark day for America.”

Congressional Rep. Steve Cohen: “This is now a thirld world country led by a tin-pot dictator.” “Safely in my office. Masked and got out. Trump is an enemy of America.”

Senator Marsha Blackburn: “To the protestors that have breached the Capitol building: you are disrupting the democratic process. You should be ashamed of yourself. This is violence. This is a crime. It must stop.” “These actions at the US Capitol by protestors are truly despicable and unacceptable. While I am safe and sheltering in place, these protests are prohibiting us from doing our constitutional duty. I condemn them in the strongest possible terms. We are a nation of laws.”

Senator Bill Haggerty: “I have always believed in peaceful protesting. What is happening at the U.S. Capitol right now is not peaceful, this is violence. I condemn it in the strongest terms. We are a nation of laws and this must stop.”

Gov. Bill Lee: “The violence happening in our nation’s capitol is inexcusable and an affront to our founding principles and freedoms. I stand with our Tennessee delegation that order must be restored immediately and thank law enforcement for their professionalism.”

Congressional Rep. Diana Harshbarger: “As Americans, we are better than the violence occurring today on Capitol Hill. We all have our first amendment right to peacefully protest the certification of election results, and should exercise it when warranted. Violence like this is never acceptable.”

Congressional Rep. Tim Burchett: “The rioting at the Capitol is disgusting and criminal. The President needs to publicly tell his supporters to stop or people could get hurt or possibly die. Thank God for the Capitol Police officers working to get the situation under control; they have families just like we do.”

Congressional Rep. John Rose: “The rioting at the Capitol is disgusting and criminal. The President needs to publicly tell his supporters to stop or people could get hurt or possibly die. Thank God for the Capitol Police officers working to get the situation under control; they have families just like we do.”

Rep. Mark Green: “This violence is unacceptable and un-American.”

House Speaker Cameron Sexton: “Peaceful assembly is a founding principle of our republic. Just like the events in Nashville last May, what is happening in Washington right now is chaos, it is violence, and it must stop. Those who are defying our laws must be held accountable for their despicable actions.”
