COVID-19 variant first detected in India has reached Tennessee

MEMPHIS, Tenn.  (AP/WMOT)  --  A troubling new COVID-19 variant has been detected here in Tennessee.

Health officials reported this week that a Memphis resident had been diagnosed as having the COVID-19/B1617 variant first detected in India. The patient had recently traveled there.

The infected indvidual has been quarantined. The person’s recent contacts are being traced as well.

India this week crossed a grim milestone when the government reported 200,000 virus related fatalities. Experts believe the actual death toll there may be much higher.

COVID-19 variants first detected in the U.K, and South Africa have also been found here in Tennessee.
