Conservative groups continue efforts to repeal Nashville's 34% tax increase

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mike Osborne) — The conservative group working to repeal Nashville’s 34 percent tax increase is writing a new referendum petition.

This second repeal effort comes just one week after a Davidson County judge scuttled the first referendum.

Some 20,000 Nashville residents signed the petition, but Chancellor Ellen Hobbs Lyle called document “defective in form” and “facially unconstitutional.”

The Metro Council passed the outsized tax increase in June to save the city’s pandemic battered budget. Opponents say officials should have made deeper cuts to the city budget instead.

WTVF says the group 4GoodGovernment hopes to begin circulating their new tax repeal petition within the next week.
