NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mike Osborne)  --  Tennessee’s COVID-19 deaths pushed above 2,000 fatalities on Saturday, a grim milestone.

However, compared to its peer and neighboring states the toll coronavirus has taken on Tennessee is fairly typical.

Tennessee ranks fifth in total COVID-19 related deaths among the seven states it borders. Georgia tops that list, reporting well over 6,300 fatalities.

Comparing deaths per capita, Tennessee ranks fifth among its seven southern neighbors for fatalities per 100,000 residents. Mississippi has suffered the most deaths per capita, Kentucky the least.

When looking at peer states, those states closest in population, Tennessee does slightly better. The state ranks second behind Missouri but ahead of Indiana.

As of Wednesday morning, Tennessee had reported 2,127 COVID-19 related fatalities.
